2009 Board of Directors

Richard Marcus, PhD, Leadership Forum Co-Chair

Photo of Richard Marcus, PhDA consulting psychologist with his own firm, Dr. Richard Marcus is co-chair of PHRPS’ annual Leadership Forum event. He also co-chairs the Main Line Local Area Network, and is co-chair of PHRPS’ recently formed first Community of Practice, the executive coaching subgroup. But being busy is nothing new.

A licensed psychologist with more than 30 years of professional experience, he has spent the last 20 years working with senior level executives, and has personally coached more than 500 executives. He has consulted for multiple local and national companies on issues relating to executive assessment and development, as well as lectured nationally on various professional development topics.

“As a psychologist, I’ve always been interested in adult development and lifespan developmental psychology. I came to HR initially through outplacement and career transition which for me, is just another form of adult development psychology. My work as an executive coach has allowed me to transition the skills I learned as a clinical psychologist into the business world.”

A PHRPS member for the past four years, Dr. Marcus got involved with PHRPS as a way to keep connected to a professional network.

“PHRPS keeps me connected to my professional network. It allows me to stay current on the best practices in the field, and it allows me to give back by contributing to the development of the HR field.”

Dr. Marcus is optimistic about the HR field.

“In the short term, because of the economy, I see some belt tightening in the field. But over the long term, I think there will be continued growth in the human capital management field as organizations continue to refine best practices for hiring, developing and retaining the right people for the right job. Knowledge in the field has exploded over the past 20 years. HCM will continue to be a great field to work in as companies of all sizes continue to work to integrate key learnings and best practices for managing people into their overall business strategies.”

A resident of Penn Valley, PA, with his wife, Dr. Marcus enjoys reading, working out at the gym, tennis, travel, and being with “my very large, chaotic family – when we go to dinner, there are 15 of us!”
