Graduate University Alliance Program
The PHRPS Community Connections Committee in conjunction with Drexel University / Le Bow College of Business Offers Graduate University Alliance Opportunities to PHRPS Members
What is it?
- The Graduate University Alliances program provides PHRPS members opportunities to be a resource to local graduate school programs through established relationships with the area Universities. This is accomplished through a number of partnerships, including an alliance with Drexel University / Le Bow College of Business.
- Le Bow has several MBA programs, the one year full-time MBA program (OYMBA), the two year full-time MBA program (TYMBA) and the LEAD program for MBA students who work full time.
- Supported by our Community Connections Committee, the Le Bow alliance provides opportunities to: 1) Mentor MBA students on Career Issues, 2) Prepare MBA students for Career Opportunities, 3) Speak in the Classroom or on a Speaker Panel, 4) Be Featured in Hire & Higher, and 5) Hire Le Bow MBA students for Internships.
- Kay Ford, Senior Director of MBA Career Services, is a member of PHRPS and the Community Connections Committee. She will act as the liaison between PHRPS members and the opportunities at Le Bow. Below is more information on the process for being considered for one of these great opportunities.
What are the specifics of the Opportunities?
- Mentor MBA Students on Career Issues:
- Career Mentors for MBA Students: Help MBA students, who are not currently working in the business world, on career development including how to determine best fit positions and work environments. Level of commitment agreed upon with student, suggested commitment is 1 or 2 hours per month.
- Mentor the MBA Student Mentor: PHRPS Executive who wants to develop one of his/her own team members, mentors the team member on how to mentor an MBA student. 1 – 2 hour per month commitment.
- Prepare MBA Students for Career Opportunities:
- Interview Practice Day will be held in January, 2009. Participate in helping students present themselves in a positive light and effectively answer job interview questions. 1 day commitment.
- Mock Job Fair Day will be held in February, 2009. Work with LeBow to create a mock job fair where MBA students present themselves to potential employers and get feedback on their resume and effectiveness presenting themselves to recruiters and hiring managers. 1 day commitment.
- Speakers:
- Speakers in the Classroom on a Hot Topic: PHRPS Executive presents on a hot topic, agreed upon by PHRPS Executive and the Professor. The presentation would be delivered in a 1 – 2 hour class.
- College Relations Speaker: The PHPRS Executive presents at an event held at the university. The audience would include the MBA student body and other local professionals invited to the event. This opportunity is for a very senior level professional.
- Speaker Panel: The PHRPS Executive presents as a panel member on a topic of expertise such as leadership development.
- Executive Newsletter “Hire and Higher”:
- Spotlight PHRPS Executives in Drexel University “Hire & Higher” Executive Newsletter.
- Internship:
- Connect Drexel University / LeBow MBA students to PHPRS Member Companies for internship opportunities. Internships can be from three months to twelve months in duration, full time or part time.
What Qualities is Le Bow Seeking in PHRPS Members?
There are different qualities sought for the different opportunities:
- Interview Practice / Mock Job Fair:
- PHRPS member in good standing with some experience in the selection process. PHRPS members will interview students individually, give feedback both in conversation and writing, and participate in a group de-brief the will focus on the success factors that each interviewer seeks in a candidate. The goal is to demonstrate that just as companies differ, so do interviews.
- Career Mentors:
- Minimum 8 years in HR related profession
- PHRPS in good standing who is willing to coach an MBA student about his/her career goal. Career Mentors are paired with MBA students who seek careers that are akin to the one the Career Mentor has achieved. This pairing provides “real world” advice from executives who had that same goal.
- Speakers:
- Have gone through Speaker Bureau's panel screening
- PHRPS in good standing who enjoy sharing knowledge or experience about some aspect of business. Recent topics have included successful re-organization, succession planning, business etiquette, interviewing strategies, trends in functional areas or corporate sectors, networking, comparison of MBA rotational and internal professional development programs, multinational organization practices, etc. There is on-going need for these and other business related issues. Speakers will be expected to participate in formal or informal mixer events that provide the students opportunities to talk informally with the speaker.
- Subject matter expert
- Has compelling unique selling proposition
